For some reason playing at Fullscreen locks the fps to below 60 making it barely playable. I saw this as a potential fix in a forum somewhere and has worked since for me. Found and tried it as well since my monitor takes ages to switch the refresh rate and Mafia forced 60hz on fullscreen (kinda stupid, though).

Without a doubt. The original was a masterpiece in my opinion and the definitive edition for once added so much more then just a shiny new graphical update. As others have said though it's not really an open world game although there is a free roam mode.

Mafia 1 is an excellent "start from scratch" remake of the first game in the engine used in the 3rd game. It's so good that sadly it means it's all downhill from there if you play in story order and not release date order. Mafia 2 DE is just a upscale of the original M2 game. But that one also has an excellent story.
The weirdest part of SA was the OG Loc mission where your character suddenly grew a conscience for like 5 seconds before agreeing to murder someone. It was this weird cognitive disconnect where you've literally murdered hundreds of people. Same goes for the entire setup with the cops.
